Today I would like to show you how you can easily make this Harry Potter key board yourself. My key rack has 4 hooks on which 2-4 keys can hang. If you have more keys, adjust the width slightly.
In keeping with the “key” theme, I chose the spell “Alohomora” from the Harry Potter universe. In the first HP, Hermione uses it to open some doors that she would perhaps have been better off not opening.
The little wings on the key hooks are also inspired by the first Harry Potter part. (Warning: spoilers) After Harry, Ron and Hermione pass through the trapdoor, they have to solve a few puzzles and tasks. One of them is to catch a winged key.
I used horseshoe nails for my key hooks. I used to ride horses and liked this little detail. You can of course also choose other hooks for your key rack.
For this you need
Tools
- Wood saw**
- Pliers (optional for shortening the hoof nails)
- Hammer
- Brush
- Sandpaper
- Pencil
- Drill** + Wood drill**
Material
- Wooden board, D18 H150 W250 mm
- 4x hooks for hanging up the keys
- 2 hooks for hanging on the wall
- some string
& how to build the key board
Step 1: Sawing to size
- Wood saw**
- Wooden board
First saw the wooden board to the desired dimensions. My dimensions are 150 x 250 mm.
Step 2: Sanding & painting
- Sandpaper
- Wooden board
- Paint + brush
Once you have sawn the wooden board to the correct dimensions, round off the edges with sandpaper. This will make it feel better. Vacuum the wooden board to remove the dust. Now paint the wooden board. Mine is black. But you can also choose any other color. Then leave the board to dry thoroughly.
Step 3: “Alohomora” lettering
- Wooden board
- Pencil
- Paint + brush
Now the key board is decorated. I drew the spell “Alohomora” in the upper area, which can open doors. I chose the “Harry Potter font” for this. I found this great site where you can easily generate and download the words and Harry Potter font in the lower section.
I then printed out the lettering in the right size, cut it out and drew it onto the wooden board in pencil. I then painted the painted letters with silver paint.
Step 4: Wings
- Wooden board
- Pencil
- Paint + brush
Now the wings are painted on. To do this, I first marked with a pencil where the key hooks should go later. The distance from the outer edge to the hook and from hook to hook is 50 mm.
I painted the wings on the marked areas of the hooks freehand with silver paint.
Step 5: Key hook
- Wooden board
- Key hook
- Pliers (opt.)
- Hammer
- Drill** + Wood drill**
Now attach the key hooks to the wooden board. In the previous step, you marked the position of your hooks. Before I attached the horseshoe nails, I shortened their length a little.
You can pre-drill the holes with a suitable Wood drill (optional) or drive the nails directly into the wood with a hammer. Make sure that the hooks all protrude about the same distance from the wood.
Step 6: Wall mounting
- Wooden board
- Drill** + Wood drill**
- 2x hooks for hanging on the wall
- Cord
Now a hook is screwed into the key board on the upper edge on the left and right. I attached a cord to it, which can then be used to hang the key rack on the wall
