A bunting is a great project for getting started with macrame knotting. It doesn’t require many knots and a single pennant can be knotted very quickly. Plus, you only need very few tools – I already had everything I needed at home.
Here you’ll find the tutorial for my macrame bunting.
For this you need
Tools
- Scissors
- Comb
- Measuring tape
Material
All my cord has a diameter of 3mm.
- 1x base cord for the bunting length
- Suspension (e.g., hook)
for each pennant you need
- 12 meter cord for each pennant
- 1.5 meter cord for each pom-pom
& this is how you knot the bunting
Step 1: Measuring
- Cord
- Measuring tape
First, measure how long the bunting should be – this will be the cord the bunting triangles attach to. My place for the bunting is 150cm long. I added a bit extra on both the left and right sides for attachment. My mounting cord is about 200cm long
Additionally, you need 10 strands of 120cm per pennant. If you’re a bit unsure at the beginning whether that will be enough, take 150cm (of course this will increase the total amount of yarn you need).
Step 2: Lark’s Head Knot
Attach the 10 strands to your mounting cord using an anchor knot
Step 3: Square Knot
Now tie the first row of square knots. 4 knots total.
Next, tie a second row of square knots using the middle strands from the previously tied square knots.
Step 4: Clove Hitch
Now tie a half diagonal clove hitch diamond.
Start with the right middle strand as the holding cord. The first working cord is the strand to the left of it. Each working cord is wrapped twice around the holding cord.
Anschließend wird ebenfalls eine Reihe Rippenknoten nach rechts gelegt. Der Trägerfaden ist der erste Arbeitsfaden der linken Reihe.
Next, also tie a row of clove hitch knots going to the right. The holding cord is the first working cord from the left row.
Step 5: Square Knot
Now tie a square knot inside the half diamond. I used two strands each as working cords and 4 strands as holding cords.
You can also tie a other pattern.
Step 6: Clove Hitch
Tie a row of clove hitch knots again from the outside toward the center on each side.
The outermost cord on each side becomes the holding cord. Each working cord is wrapped twice around the holding cord.
Step 7: Diagonal Braid Knot
“Tie a row of diagonal braid knots from the outside toward the center on each side.
Step 8: Clove hitch
“Now tie a row of clove hitch knots from the outside toward the center on each side.
The outermost cord on each side becomes the holding cord. Each working cord is wrapped twice around the holding cord.
Step 9: Pom-Poms
Finally, I attached a pom-pom to every second pennant. For this, I frayed 7 strands of 20cm length each and tied them together with another strand.
